  9. WINDOWS(TM) 3.1 MULTIMEDIA AND OLE SUPPORT
  10. New Capabilities Demonstrated At COMDEX Windows World
  11.     (TUCSON, AZ -- April 1, 1992) -- Artisoft, Inc. 
  12. announced today that at Spring COMDEX it will be 
  13. demonstrating the new Multimedia capabilities of its 
  14. Sounding Board adapter. Supporting Windows 3.1 
  15. Multimedia and Object Linking and Embedding (OLE), the 
  16. Sounding Board adapter allows users to create 
  17. digitally recorded sound files which can be embedded 
  18. in or linked to other OLE or Multimedia applications. 
  19. Priced at $99 (ISA bus) or $199 (MicroChannel bus), 
  20. the new Sounding Board adapter will be available in 
  21. the second quarter of calendar year 1992.
  22.     "Multimedia is the wave of the future," states Jack 
  23. Schoof (pronounced "shoaf"), Artisoft's President and 
  24. CEO. "And we're not only making it accessible to PC 
  25. users, we're making it easy to use and affordable."
  26.     The Sounding Board adapter can be used to enhance 
  27. documents created from within any other Windows 
  28. application that supports OLE protocols. This enables 
  29. users in, for instance, Word for Windows to create a 
  30. presentation with an ongoing voice commentary. Users 
  31. can also enhance their electronic mail with the 
  32. Sounding Board adapter.
  33.     The ArtiSound(TM) Recorder software allows a user 
  34. to either link or embed an sound file into another 
  35. Windows application document. This allows the Sounding 
  36. Board adapter to be used with Multimedia applications 
  37. or within a Multimedia environment.
  38.     Users can embed a sound file into a Windows 
  39. document by simply copying it into a Windows document. 
  40. The sound file appears as an icon in the document, 
  41. which, when selected, runs the Sounding Board 
  42. adapter's ArtiSound Recorder software so that the user 
  43. does not have to exit the current document or even 
  44. switch windows. If the user edits the sound file 
  45. within the document, the changes will only affect the 
  46. embedded sound file; the original sound file will 
  47. remain intact.
  48.     Users also have the option of linking sound files, 
  49. also by copying them into a Windows document. Linked 
  50. sound files are edited in the same manner as embedded 
  51. ones, except that any changes will also be made to the 
  52. original sound file, no matter where it is located. 
  53.     The Sounding Board adapter converts between 
  54. audio/voice signals and a digital data stream to allow 
  55. users to record and play sounds, manipulate existing 
  56. sounds and play Windows WAVE-type sounds. Its 
  57. ArtiSound Recorder software uses the 8kHz mulaw 
  58. standard (the voice standard developed by telephone 
  59. companies), but it can also convert different types of 
  60. files, playing and recording PCM data at an 8, 11, or 
  61. 22kHz sampling rate.
  62.     Menu options allow users to cut, copy and paste 
  63. sounds from the Clipboard, insert and mix sound files, 
  64. increase or decrease volume and speed, add an echo, 
  65. reverse the sound to play backwards, auto-repeat 
  66. sounds and configure the play/record devices. The 
  67. ArtiSound Recorder software uses a device-independent 
  68. Windows API which allows applications to use any sound 
  69. input/output boards which provide for that Windows 
  70. API.
